The Epic Pattyland

Kia Ora and welcome back to my blog. Today I will be showing you my PBL Create about Earth Systems. The Earth Systems we have learnt about was Rocks, Water, Air, Soil, and Biodiversity. For our create we had to make a island, landmass or continent using either Minecraft, make a paper mache, make a map and there were way more options. Once we finished we had to make a blurb to go along with the create.

I have created my landmass using Minecraft. In my landmass, I have a jungle, spruce forest, an oak tree forest, rivers, lakes, oceans, beaches and plains. In my island, I have many life forms like bees which is needed for honey, I have rabbits which foxes will eat, I also added some Camels in the beach, some sea turtles, some Pandas, Sheep, Goats, Llamas and some Chickens which can mostly be found in the plains.

Here is my blurb which also has some screenshots of my landmass. The link to the blurb is here in case it is blurry to read.

Tall Buildings and Towers!

There are many tall buildings, skyscrapers, towers and heaps of taller structures. In reading this week, we have been reading about 2 tall structures. The two structures that I read about were the Burj Kahlifa in Dubai and the KVLY-TV mast in the states.

Two facts I learnt about the Burj Kahlifa was that it holds many records like the Tallest skyscraper to top of spire, Building with most floors, World’s fastest elevators at speed of 64 km/h, World’s highest swimming pool and heaps more. Another thing I learnt about the burj khalifa was that it costed $2,491,297,500.00 New Zealand Dollars to build it. That is a lot of money! Two facts I learnt about the KVLY-TV mast is that it once collapsed in 1991 due to the lack of maintenance. It is also the 4th tallest standing structure in the world.

My reading goal was to Make connections between texts and Identify some text events and features, and discuss what they make the reader think about.

For my create we had to make a copy of the doc and put in the differences and simalarities of the Burj Khalifa, and the KVLY-TV mast. Also in the doc we had to write in some features of my tower/building.

  • I made Twin Towers
  • It has a glass floored bridge and an observation deck.
  • It will be 280 stories high.
  • It will have an indoor rooftop pool.
  • We are going to have a waterfall from the bridge.
  • We will have many apartments, offices and restaurants.

Have you been to a tall building before? Goodbye!

Wowzing Water

This week for reading we have been reading about natural resources. I learnt that Water is a natural resource because Water occurs naturally in the environment and is useful to humans and other living things. My learning goal was to identify several ideas, discuss the author’s stance or purpose, and understand relationships in the text.

I learnt about water. Something I learnt about water is that more than 70 percent of Earth’s surface is covered by water, only 2.5 percent of it is freshwater. Out of that freshwater, almost 70 percent is permanently frozen in the ice caps covering Antarctica and Greenland. Only about 1 percent of the freshwater on Earth is available for people to use for drinking, bathing, and irrigating crops. I chose to learn about water because I really like the ocean and lakes, I also live near the beach.

What natural resource would you prefer to learn about?

Reading Create

Hello everyone and welcome back to my blog. Today I will be showing you my Term 4 Week 2 reading create, about Antibiotics. For the past week we have been learning about Antibiotics, Antibiotics are used to treat or prevent some types of bacterial infection. Penicillin is an antibiotic. It is used to treat infections caused by bacteria, and did you know that it was discovered by accident! Really cool fact I learnt that I cant get out of my head.

We had 2 create tasks this week, #1 being a slideshow where we had to fill in 3 boxes, 1 box said that I had to fill in my initial predictions about the text. The second one said that I had to write down 5 statements you have learnt from the text. And my third one said that I had to add my new ideas and new thinking after reading. The second task was to answer some questions and some solutions to becoming antibiotic resistance. Solutions Slideshow

I enjoyed learning about something new, I always do, I found this reading session to be pretty interesting. Have you ever taken Antibiotics? If you have, what was it for?

Don’t Sit if you want to be Fit!

Hello everyone and welcome to the most “fantastical” blog. Today I will be showing you, and giving you some context about my reading create based on Don’t Sit if you want to be fit. My learning goal was to Make connections between texts and own life experiences, using more sophisticated texts and identify some text events and features, and discuss what they make the reader think about.

So in this book we did many experiments to do with measuring our pulse. We had to sit down for at least five minutes. Then have a partner time you for 30 seconds as you count your pulse, we then had to record your result, then repeat with your partner. After this experiment, we did another one. We had to stand up for at least five minutes, then measure my pulse again, then we had to record your result and repeat with a partner.

In our create, we had to create a poster about the negatives for sitting for too long and the benefits of moving. We had to also include 3 recommendations to get people moving more. My Recommendations to get you moving more, is that you will be more focused in things you know you can hardly focus on, You will feel more energetic everyday, and your body breaks down more fat than when you’re sitting! Here is my create:

Before I go I have a question to ask you, what would be some recommendations that you would give to get people moving more? Goodbye!

My Trip across Europe!

Hello everyone and welcome back to my blog. Today I will be explaining and showing some highlights of my trip. The countries I went to included the UAE, the UK, France, Austria, Germany, Switzerland and Italy. I will be telling you something interesting I have done in each of these countries.

The UAE (United Arab Emirates)

So in order to get to London, I had to lay over in Dubai, a desert city but very modern and futuristic. We stayed there for about 3 nights at the world famous Palm Jumeriah. It was a really cool place, and our hotel staff were very welcoming people. Some stuff we did in Dubai was go to the Largest Waterpark, Inside the Burj Khalifa, and we went to a cool show in the middle of the desert, with a tourist company called Arabian Adventures.

The UK (United Kingdom)

We went on the plane from Dubai to London which took 9 hours. In London, we went to a tourist group and visited Windsor Castle, The Roman Baths and Stonehenge. Our tour guy was such a vibey guy, and was nice to get along with. While we were in London, I also catched up with my cousin, he took us to see Buckingham Palace and Camden town. It was nice to see him after a very long time.

France

After London, we decided to go on the train from London to Paris, on the famous Eurostar train. The train goes in a tunnel under the English Channel, and goes 300km. We stayed at the Hilton in La Defense, which was inside a great big shopping mall. While staying in the mall, we also had acsess to the La Defense Tube Station, which was easy to use. We went to the Eiffel Tower and went to the most hghest part where tourists are allowed to go. After La Defense, we stayed at the Marvel themed Disneyland hotel, which was very cool, and had easy acsess to the park. Disneyland was awesome and had so many cool and iconic rides.

Austria

I was sad to say goodbye to Paris, but we had to continue on the trip. Our next destination was Vienna, Austria. I was excited because I was about to go on an airline that I have always wanted to be on as a kid, Air France. When we landed in Vienna, we got a taxi to our hotel. Something cool about the Aiport Taxis in Vienna is that they are either Mercedes or Lexus branded cars and vans. If I am going to be honest, me and dad basically did nothing in Vienna, besides go to the bar downstairs of our hotel. But the girls got to go to the Zoo.

Germany.

Luckily, our travel agent booked us a hotel right in front of the main train station, which we were going to take to get to Munich. Unlike London, there wasn’t a P.A telling us our train have arrived, so we had to head to the platform early in order to see when the train arrives. We found our train, got on it, and started training to Munich. In Munich we hardly did anything, but walk through the streets and go on a hop on hop off tour bus. Anyways afterwards we were going on another train to Switzerland.

Switzerland

When we were in Switzerland, surprisingly it was warmer than what I thought. In Switzerland, we took a tour bus to the Rhine Falls, which is apparently the biggest waterfall in the European continent. We also walked around and shopped in the streets. Something cool about the Maccas in Switzerland, is that they have prawns on their menu!

Italy

In Italy, we decided to drive from Milan to Rome, which we found out was a stupid and dumb idea. In fact, when we were trying to get out of this really narrow street in Pisa, we started a really big traffic jam, we blame this car who parked right on the turn. We went on a train from Zurich to Milan, which was such a scenic route, we even got bumped to first class on the train because we missed our original train. Anyways whilst in Milan, all we did was go inside of the Duomo Cathedral and shop around it. We even went to Venice for a tiny bit while we were staying in Milan, it was really cool, but the water was very dirty. On the road trip to our next destination, Florence, we went to Pisa, where we saw the leaning tower, and one big traffic jam. To be honest the reason why we went to Florence is to take a break from driving. Anyways we continued our journey to Rome which was a terror. I say that because we missed so many turns and exits, but we made it eventually. Our hotel was amazing because it was a walking distance to the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps. In Rome, I also took this tour where we are riding a horse that goes from the Spanish Steps, Parliament Square, Trevi Fountain and the Colosseum.

The way back

On the way to the airport, we had Emirates pick us up in a van for the luggage and us. It took somewhere around 40 minutes to get from the hotel to the airport. At the airport, we checked in, went through security and headed to the lounge. The Emirates lounge in Rome was cool because they had a selection of food and drinks. We also hopped on our plane from the lounge. When we landed in Dubai, we also went to their lounge, which was 10 times bigger than Rome. All I really did was sleep, but there was many places to eat for free. Just like Rome, we could hop on the plane from the lounge. Our plane to Christchurch stopped in Sydney, so we went through transit and went to the lounge, hopped on the plane, and headed back to Christchurch. When we landed in Christchurch, we had Emirates pick us up again and was really cool.

I enjoyed my travelling experience and learnt many things.

My Experience at YMCA Wainui Camp!

On Monday September 10th, Kaupeka Year 7 went away to camp. Besides me, This was the day that I came off a 25 hour flight from Rome to Christchurch, stopping in Dubai. I never went on Monday because I was recovering from Jet lag. But I went to camp the next day, Tuesday 11th of September. The drive took about An hour and a half, I slept the whole way. When I opened my car door, all I can hear is the boys screaming as they ran towards the car.

When I arrived at camp, we had breakfast and afterwards some free time before the activities. My activity group was made up of Oscar, Christian, Kellan, Ella, Mikayla, Claudia and Payton. Our activity leader was Andrew, who was Oscars dad. The first activity I did was Archery, which was not really fun and not really boring. I really sucked at Archery, because I kept on hitting either the white or the hay.

I have created a poster to showcase and reflect on my time at camp. I created my poster using google drawings because I am really used to using it and feel more confident with using it to showcase.

Have you ever been somewhere in the Banks Peninsula area? (That can be places like Wainui, Little River and Akaroa)

Super Science

Kia Ora and welcome back to my blog. For the past couple of weeks we have been doing Science, our main focus for science was electricity. We have done many cool experiments like making a circuit, making a light bulb glow using play-dough, and making a buzzer sound using salt and water.

Today we made a buzzer go off. The stuff we needed was 2 copper and 2 zinc nails, water, salt, 2 beakers, 1 for water and 1 for the water used. We also needed a Plastic spoon and several tissues. Before we did this we needed to make a hypothesis, my hypothesis was that it would not work because how could water and salt make electricity for 2 nails to make a buzzer go off? Our first attempt was a failure, we tried 2 zinc nails, and then we tried 1 copper and 1 zinc nail, and it did work! My hypothesis was wrong. I was really happy that it worked, I never knew that could happened!

Out of all the experiments we did I really enjoyed doing the copper and zinc nail buzzer experiment because out of all of the experiments I have done so far, that was the only successful one.

What is a cool experiment you have done?

Poems, Poems, Poems!

Kia Ora, Over the first few weeks of Term 3 we have been reading and writing all different types of poetry. Please enjoy reading my poetry

I discovered that a list poem is a poetic form that presents ideas, images, or emotions through a series of items or descriptions. It was interesting to present my interests by using images and ideas. It was really fun to do and I feel like doing more in the future.

Blackout poetry is the art of selectively erasing words from existing texts to create new poetic compositions. It was interesting to find the words to use and black out all of the other words. I also enjoyed making different was of presenting my work like adding basketball related things.

I learned that a limerick is a humorous five-line poem with a distinctive rhyme scheme and a bouncy rhythm. I also learned that we can do 7-9 syllables so it doesn’t really matter if we accidentally add more or less syllables, I enjoyed decorating my limerick and writing it down. I think that my limerick was humorous and really enjoyed making them.

Here is my new poem I have made, my Biographical Poem about me. A Biographical Poem is a simple poem written about a person, and it follows a predictable pattern. Bio poems generally don’t rhyme, and they can be autobiographical or biographical. A autobiographical poem is about someone famous, while a biographical poem is about yourself.

Over the last two weeks, I really enjoyed making my poems and making them the best I could, I also enjoyed decorating them, I found it fun to do. I found it hard picking my words for my poems, especially my blackout poem, but eventually I found the right words. What is something new you learned about poetry from my blog?

Magic Maths based on Probability!

Kia Ora everyone and welcome to my blog. This week, we have been learning about probability, and I will share my create task with you today. My create was to make a graph about what 45 people will chose at the SFOA Mid-winter celebration.  So what I did is that I spun a wheel 45 times with the options of Porridge, Hot Cakes, Sausage Sizzle and Hot Chocolate. After I spun the wheel 45 times, I recorded how many times it landed on a certain thing. For example, it landed on Porridge 12 times. I notice that Hotcakes was landed on the least amount of times, being landed on 9 times. I also noticed that Porridge, Snags and Hot Chocolate were landed on the same amount of times, being landed on 12 times, which also makes them the most landed on. The Probability of people choosing Hotcakes is 9/45 people, and the probability of people choosing Porridge, Sausages and Hot Chocolate, is 36/45 people. My favourite part of the task was making and customising my graph, because I like learning new things on technology, like I just learnt that you can change the colour of it! Anyways, here is my graph:

What is your favourite food option? Is it Porridge, Hot Cakes, Sausages or Hot Chocolate?
