The Horrors of the Berlin Wall

Hello everybody! Today I will be sharing with you my learning this week about Freedom. We learnt heaps about the Berlin Wall, splitting East Berlin and West Berlin. My create task was to make a poem about the Berlin Wall. But before I show you my Create task, let me share with you some not so fun facts about the Berlin Wall. Number One: The Berlin Wall was made to keep residents of the Communist East Berlin from escaping to the free West Germany. Number Two: There were 5,000 successful escapes over the wall and 600 un-successful escapes. Number Three: The Fall of the Berlin Wall happened by mistake. I’m sure you will learn something new from my poem, so ladies and gentlemen, My fantastical create task.

What is something interesting you know or just read about the Berlin Wall? Goodbye and have a great rest of the week!

My Exotic Birthday Present! (The word Exotic is going to pop up a lot)

Kia Ora everyone! As some may have known, on the 10th of November it was my birthday. I never got to spend my Birthday at school since my amazing family had booked us a 4 day vacation down south in Queenstown. It was so fun and my favourite part about Queenstown was luge riding up on the Gondola.

But before I even packed, my mother and father surprised me with the best birthday present I had ever gotten so far. A full PC setup! My new PC also had all the specs I ever wanted, If you want to know here it is: CPU: Amd Ryzen 7 GPU: RTX 3070ti RAM: 32 Gigabytes Ram and the list goes on and on. I also got new monitors to assist with my exotic gaming space.

So when I first loaded up that exoctic machine, the first thing I did was of course signed in to Google, Microsoft, Bing the list goes on and on, Then I reached the part where I can finally install my games. I can remember the first game I downloaded on that exotic machine which was my favourite Call of Duty: Warzone.

Anyways I have to go now, What is your favourite video game and what do you play on? Here is a picture of me with my new setup (I know I look cringe but who cares):

Every week we have to do a maths board. A math board is basciccly a board with 5 columns, the first is about the question and answer, the second is about solving it numerically, the third is a word problem, the 4th is solving the question another way and the fifth is solving it visually.

You get a google drawing of questions. Then you choose one question and solve it. This is the link to my maths board: Link

Why is the Mediterranean country Cyprus divided?

Hi I’m Patrick and today I will be explaining why the country Cyprus is divided.

But first, What is Cyprus? Cyprus is an island country located in the Mediterranean Sea right under Turkey (Türkiye). Fun fact about Cyprus, Cyprus is home to the oldest manufactured wine in the world!

Now for why we are here, Why is Cyprus divided? Although Cyprus falls under 1 internationally, it is divided into 2 regions, plus the areas controlled by Britain and the E.U. This was caused due to an attempt to annex the island in 1974 from England to Greece through the coup d’etat, which led to Cyprus gaining its independence.

The English decided to keep the areas of Akrotiri and Dhekelia to turn them into military bases for key access to the Middle East.

Turkey invaded five days after the coup d’etat had begun creating the de facto state of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which is only recognised by the Turkish government divided from the north by the E.U buffer zone. The southern half continues to be the Republic of Cyprus, which is internationally recognised.

That is it for today, what did you learn today? Cya!

Paris, its capital, is famed for its fashion houses, classical art museums including the Louvre and monuments like the Eiffel Tower. The country is also renowned for its wines and sophisticated cuisine. Lascaux’s ancient cave drawings, Lyon’s Roman theatre and the vast Palace of Versailles attest to its rich history.

Did you know that France owns some outer territories, that’s right! France owns the following territories. Saint-Martin, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Saint-Barthélemy, French Guiana, Saint Pierre and Miquelon, Wallis and Futuna, French Polynesia, New Caledonia, Mayotte and Réunion.

Country of the week: The Kingdom of Denmark

Denmark, The country where mums could leave their babies in their prams on the sidewalks of Copenhagen and have a night out with the girls. That is how safe Denmark is. According to the Global Peace index, Denmark is the 4th safest country behind Ireland, New Zealand and Iceland.

The Kingdom of Denmark has a total landmass of 852,969 mi², well included Greenland but without Greenland, oh boy it is smaller than New Zealand. So without Greenland, mainland Denmark has a total landmass of… 16,639 mi²! I know, crazy right!

Did you know that there is an underwater bridge that allows you to cross the border from Copenhagen, Denmark to Malmo, Sweden! Here are some more facts. Denmark is 1 of 9 Nordic countries. Did you know that the Danish flag is the oldest flag in the world, created in 1370?

No more facts, now lets talk about the population. The population of Denmark is around 5.8 million residences. Including Greenland it would be somewhere around 5.85 million people, since there is only around 50,000 people living in Greenland.

That is all today, I hope you guys have learnt something. What did you learn today? Goodbye!

Athletics Day

On Tuesday the 25th of October 2022, all St Francis of Assisi students years 1-8 hopped on a bus to Rawhiti Domain. Why you may ask, because it was athletics day. The day where I have fun doing other activities besides the activities that involves running!

So we got to the domain and it was a nice sunny day with a couple of clouds. Firstly I started with my 60 metre sprints and came 4th, then came my 80 metre sprints, came 4th in that too. Wow! 4th in both sprints! That was an achievement for me, but next time I would try to get top 3 next time.

After that I sat down and had some lunch. My friend Tharun bought a whole packet of Oreo’s to share with us. So I munched on 2, then I chugged down nearly all of the water I had in my bottle, I drank a lot.

Then came Long Distance, the one I hated the most since it is really hard for me to run long distances. This year we had to run 1000 meters which is equal to 1 km. Ready Set Go! We started running and I would have finished my first lap but then came, the growing pains, well according to my doctor. I fell to the ground and started holding on to my chest, a couple of friends came and stopped to check if I was okay. Then I got sent home and had the most peaceful sleep in all of mankind. Very peaceful with no interruptions, well it was until my sister came home and started to blast her favourite song in my ear.

Well that is all from me today. What is your favourite athletics activity? Mine is Shot put! Goodbye and have a good day.

Diversity within Sport

Hello Guys and this week I will be showing you my work for Reading this week. This week we were looking at diversity within sport and some athletes that have been  discriminated against in Sport.

For our independent task we had to read different stories and we were given some questions to answer about the selected story. We had to answer questions about being discriminated in sport, putting people in boxes and the word, “Apartheid” which was segregation happening in South Africa. Here is the link to my questions and answers.

We also had another independent task and that was to make a Venn Diagram about the characters Meggie and Zodwa from a story we read about the Sprinkbok tour in 1981. Here is the link to my Venn Diagram.

Now for my create, we had to either make a comic, write a poem or make an inspirational poster about someone that has been discriminated against in Sport. I chose to do a poem about the athlete Jackie Robinson who was discriminated against playing baseball in the 1950’s. Later on he completed his goal on making it to the baseball hall of fame whilst  ignoring all of the racism in the stands. Here is the link to my poem.

Anyways I hope you have enjoyed my blog today. QUESTION ALERT!!!!!!! If you were to write a poem about an athlete that discriminated against in sport, who would you choose? Goodbye!

Country of the Week! Part One: Australia.

Hello Everyone and welcome to my new series, Country of the Week. Country of the Week is a weekly series when I talk about a random Country. I talk about how they were discovered, total populations, interesting facts and heaps more! Today I chose to talk about Australia! Enjoy!

Australia, the land down under, the land where a man can enjoy a Vegemite sandwich while being eaten by a crocodile while the crocodile is being eaten by a wild kangaroo. Nah, Just a joke I made up. Funny aye. Anyways I will be talking about Australia and how it was discovered, total population and interesting facts.

How It was discovered.

While Indigenous Australians have inhabited the continent for tens of thousands of years, and traded with nearby islanders, the first documented landing on Australia by a European was in 1606. The Dutch explorer Willem Janszoon landed on the western side of Cape York Peninsula and charted about 300 km from the coastline. But before the Dutch arrived, there was a tribe on the island known as Aboriginal Australians. According to National Geographic, Aboriginal Australians could be the oldest population of humans that were living out of Australia, Snazzy.

Population.

Did you know that the US State of California has a population of 39.35 million people. Well Australia has less than that, Australia has a population of 25.69 million people with an annual population growth rate of 1.3% annual change.

Interesting Facts.

Did you know that Australia lost a war to its national bird, the Emu. I bet you never knew that Australia is 1 of 5 nations with the Southern Cross on their flag. Did you know that the Australia alps get more snow than the Swiss Alps, very cool!

Well that is it for me today. QUESTION ALERT!!!!!!!! What was the name of the Dutch explorer that discovered Australia? Goodbye!
